How to spot a legit seller

Read before you message anyone

When you click through to Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or Craigslist, run through this checklist first. Scammers rely on buyers skipping this step — takes 60 seconds and can save you thousands.

Account is over 1 year old
Tap their name → "Member since." Brand-new accounts are the #1 scam signal.
Has multiple other listings
Real sellers usually have several items posted, not just one car.
Has ratings and reviews
OfferUp and Facebook both show seller ratings. Look for 4+ stars.
Profile photo looks real
Fake accounts use stock photos or have no photo at all.
Provides the VIN number
Check it free at vehiclehistory.gov before you ever visit.
Willing to meet publicly
A DMV lot or busy parking area. Legit sellers won't refuse this.
Allows a pre-purchase inspection
$100–150 mechanic inspection can reveal $3,000 in hidden problems.
Price matches market value
Look it up on KBB.com or CarGurus. A deal too good to be true usually isn't.

🚨 Walk away immediately if any of these are true

Wants Zelle, Venmo, or wire transfer before you see the car
Says they're "overseas" or will "ship it to you"
Refuses to share the VIN or let you inspect it
Price is 30%+ below market with no explanation
Account was created days or weeks ago
Pressures you — "I have another buyer coming today"
